The Lowdown on Special Enrollment Periods

Some of you may be getting an abundance of emails saying, “You may qualify for the special enrollment period, find out today!” This is the blog to break down what those are, what they mean, and if you really do qualify!

A special enrollment period is a time outside of the specified time to enroll in The Health Care Marketplace that allows some people  to apply for insurance due to certain circumstances. A list of some of these circumstances are as follows:

  • You are getting married
  • You are having a baby
  • You are adopting a child
  • You are loosing other health insurance
  • You are permanently moving outside of your current plans coverage area
  • You are gaining citizenship
  • You are gaining continuing status as a member of an Indian tribe or Alaska Native shareholder
  • You are leaving incarceration

But, what the most recent emails are all about is the special enrollment period that goes until April 30th, 2015. What qualifies people for this enrollment period is:

1) You didn’t know until after The Marketplace closed on February 15th, 2015 that you were required to have health coverage or you didn’t understand how it would affect you and your family.

2) You owe fees for not having coverage for 1 or more months in 2014. 3) You aren’t already enrolled in 2015 coverage.

If these descriptions apply to you, you are eligible to get insurance during this special enrollment period! Go to today!
